The Great Value Hawaiian Rolls recall involves a specific 4-pack product manufactured by United States Bakery for Walmart’s Great Value brand. The recall was initiated after the company observed an oily and sticky substance on the surface of the packaging that directly contacts the finished rolls. The FDA record identifies the affected product as a 4.5-ounce Great Value Hawaiian Roll 4pk, with specific Julian production codes and production dates.
One important detail is that the recalled product was not sold to consumers through stores. According to the recall record, the affected cases remained at wholesale distribution centers and had been accounted for. That means many shoppers searching for this recall may not actually have an affected package at home.
This guide explains what was recalled, which dates and codes are involved, why the rolls were recalled, where the product was distributed, and what consumers should know.
Is There a Great Value Hawaiian Rolls Recall?
Yes. A recall involving Great Value Hawaiian Roll 4pk was initiated by United States Bakery in May 2026 and was posted in the FDA’s food enforcement information in June. The product was identified as a perishable ready-to-eat dinner roll sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand.
The recall concerns a specific production group rather than every Great Value Hawaiian Roll product.
The affected product is:
| Recall Detail | Information |

The FDA-related enforcement record says the product was never sold in stores and remained at wholesale distribution centers.
Which Great Value Hawaiian Rolls Were Recalled?
The recall is limited to a particular Great Value Hawaiian Roll 4pk with a 4.5-ounce net weight.
The affected packages were associated with W1 116 Julian codes, followed by specific production codes:
- 116
- 119
- 120
- 127
- 134
- 135
The corresponding production dates were:
| Julian Code | Production Date |
|---|---|
| 116 | April 26, 2026 |
| 119 | April 29, 2026 |
| 120 | April 30, 2026 |
| 127 | May 7, 2026 |
| 134 | May 14, 2026 |
| 135 | May 15, 2026 |
These codes and dates are the key identifiers consumers should understand when researching the recall.
Why Were Great Value Hawaiian Rolls Recalled?
United States Bakery initiated the recall after observing an oily and sticky substance on the direct food-contact surface packaging of the finished product.
The available FDA enforcement information does not establish that the substance was a particular ingredient, chemical, or pathogen. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to claim a specific contaminant unless additional official information confirms it.
This distinction matters because some online reports have speculated about what might have caused the oily substance. Those explanations should not be treated as confirmed facts.
Was the Great Value Hawaiian Roll Recall a Class II Recall?
Yes. The recall is identified as Class II in the available FDA enforcement data.
An FDA Class II recall generally means that exposure to the affected product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, while the probability of serious adverse effects is considered remote.
The classification should not be interpreted as meaning that every person who consumes the product will become sick. It describes the regulatory risk level assigned to the recall.
Were the Recalled Hawaiian Rolls Sold at Walmart?
This is one of the most important points about the recall.
Although the FDA distribution information lists numerous states, the affected product was not sold in Walmart stores to consumers. The recall record says the product remained at wholesale distribution centers and that all affected product had been accounted for.
This explains why some online headlines may make the recall sound like a consumer shelf recall when the available enforcement information indicates that the affected product did not reach retail shoppers.
The states listed in the distribution information include:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Being listed as a distribution state does not mean that consumers in each state purchased the recalled rolls.
How Many Great Value Hawaiian Roll Packages Were Recalled?
The FDA enforcement record identifies 10,447 cases of the affected product. The rolls were packaged in cases containing individual 4.5-ounce four-packs.
Some secondary reports have converted the case quantity into an estimated number of individual retail packages. However, the FDA-linked enforcement information is the better source for the official recalled quantity.
What Should You Do If You Have Great Value Hawaiian Rolls?
If you believe you have a package matching the recalled product description and codes, do not eat it.
Instead:
- Check the package size and product description.
- Look for the applicable Julian code.
- Compare it with the affected production codes.
- Do not consume a package that matches the recall.
- Follow the manufacturer’s or retailer’s instructions for handling or returning the product.
- If you are uncertain, check the latest FDA recall information before consuming it.
Because the official record says the affected product remained at distribution centers and was accounted for, most consumers should not have an affected package in their homes.
Can You Still Buy Great Value Hawaiian Rolls?
Great Value continues to list Hawaiian rolls among its products. Walmart’s current product listings include Great Value Sweet Hawaiian Rolls in 4.5-ounce four-count and 12-ounce 12-count versions.
That does not mean all Great Value Hawaiian Rolls are part of the recall.
The recall applies to the specific product and production codes identified by the enforcement record. Consumers should avoid assuming that every Great Value Hawaiian Roll has been recalled.
Is Every Great Value Hawaiian Roll Recalled?
No.
The available recall information identifies a specific 4.5-ounce Great Value Hawaiian Roll 4pk and specific production codes. It does not establish a blanket recall of all Great Value Hawaiian Rolls.
This is an important distinction for shoppers because Walmart sells multiple Great Value Hawaiian roll products and package sizes.
What Does the Julian Code Mean?
A Julian production code is a numerical code used to identify when a product was produced.
For this recall, the affected records identify:
W1 116
along with the individual Julian codes 116, 119, 120, 127, 134, and 135. The FDA-related record also provides the corresponding production dates.
Checking the code is more reliable than simply looking at the brand name because a brand can continue selling unaffected products while a specific production batch is recalled.
Did Anyone Get Sick From the Recalled Rolls?
The available recall information does not establish a confirmed illness outbreak associated with these Great Value Hawaiian Rolls.
The recall was initiated because of the oily and sticky substance observed on the food-contact packaging.
Because the affected product reportedly never reached retail stores and remained at distribution centers, consumers should not assume that the recall represents a widespread exposure event.
Is the Great Value Hawaiian Rolls Recall Still Active?
The available recall databases currently identify the FDA enforcement event as completed, rather than an ongoing consumer recall. The enforcement record is associated with recall number H-0949-2026.
However, consumers researching an older recall should still rely on the latest information from the FDA and Walmart rather than outdated social-media posts or articles.
What Happened to the Recalled Product?
According to the available recall record, the affected product remained at wholesale distribution centers and had been accounted for. It was therefore not a situation where large quantities of recalled rolls remained on Walmart shelves awaiting removal.
This is particularly important when interpreting reports that say the rolls were “sold in 26 states.” The states in the enforcement record describe distribution, but the record separately states that the product was never sold in stores.
Great Value Hawaiian Rolls Recall vs. Other Great Value Recalls
Walmart’s Great Value brand includes thousands of food and household products, so a recall involving one product should not automatically be connected to unrelated Great Value recalls.
For example, a separate 2026 recall involving Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend concerned possible E. coli contamination. That is a different product and a different recall event from the Hawaiian roll issue.
Consumers should always verify the exact product name, size, code, and reason for recall before assuming two recall notices are connected.
What Consumers Should Know About This Recall
The most important takeaway is that the Great Value Hawaiian Rolls recall was specific and limited.
The recalled product was a 4.5-ounce four-pack with identified production codes. The issue involved an oily and sticky substance on packaging that directly contacts the food. Most importantly, the available FDA enforcement information says the recalled product never reached stores and remained at wholesale distribution centers.
Therefore, consumers should not interpret online headlines as evidence that every Great Value Hawaiian Roll is unsafe.
Instead, check the exact product and production information whenever a recall is announced.
